InCorr: Interactive Data-Driven Correlation Panels for Digital Outcrop Analysis

Geological analysis of 3D Digital Outcrop Models (DOMs) for reconstruction ancient habitable environments is a key aspect the upcoming ESA ExoMars 2022 Rosalind Franklin Rover and NASA 2020 Perseverance missions in seeking signs past life on Mars. Geologists measure interpret DOMs, create sedimentary logs combine them `correlation panels' to map extents geological horizons, build stratigraphic model understand their position landscape. Currently, creation correlation panels completely manual therefore time-consuming, inflexible. With InCorr we present visualization solution that encompasses logging tool an interactive data-driven panel evolves with analysis. For closely cooperated leading planetary geologists form design study. We verify our results by recreating existing validate against manually created illustration. Further, conducted user-study wider circle geologists. Our evaluation shows efficiently supports domain experts tackling research questions it has potential significantly impact how work digital outcrop representations general.
